My Favorite Comic Yet
This comic took around 30-40 hours to complete, and hopefully it shows! I am super proud of it and how it turned out, especially where I was falling through the cave world. I started with those pages after sketching and they are still my favorite parts out of the entire project.
About this Comic
This comic is based on a day in February 2023 where some fluctuations in the weather caused all the snow to melt then refreeze. This created a a thick blanket of ice that covered or completely encased everything. My classes were cancelled, so I decided to make the most of this weather by going out and taking pictures. A lot of the photographs I took were of plants encased in ice. I had never seen this happen before so I found it just fascinating.
Three examples of these photographs are in the slideshow below.
A lot of the comic frames are directly based off photographs that I took that day. In coping with the mild winter this year I found myself reminiscing about it. I imagined the snow as ice on a frozen lake, then what would happen if I fell through. Then the idea of the frame itself breaking beneath a character gave me further inspiration for the comic.
For the color, I wanted to reflect the feeling of everything being icy and cold, hence why I tried to keep to cool colors and utilized a lot of shades of blue. I think the warmest I ever got was the skin tone, the brick house, and the branches on the first page. The fifth page where I fall into the cave of worms I drew entirely with shades of blue and purple.
Just Before You Head Out
If you want to see my process for the comic, I’ll have a video on my YouTube channel going over the painting process of my favorite page. I also made a custom tree brush for this comic so if you like those trees and want to use them its available to download on my Ko-Fi.
